The Architectural Services Department Hksar, known for their innovative designs, has created a unique and captivating space in the heart of Hong Kong. InPark, also known as the Secret Community Garden, is a transformation of a tiny open space surrounded by high-density commercial buildings into a vibrant oasis for the public to enjoy, play, and relax.
The design of InPark is centered around a gentle-sloped central green lawn, providing a welcoming and open space for visitors. Alongside the lawn, a half basketball court, a multi-purposed stage, shelters, exhibition kiosks, and supporting office and toilet facilities are seamlessly integrated into the park. These features ensure that the park caters to the diverse needs of the community.
What sets InPark apart is the incorporation of seven sets of public artworks that celebrate the industrial past of the area. These award-winning artworks interact with park users in creative ways, adding an element of intrigue and storytelling to the space. The combination of greenery and art creates a harmonious and inspiring environment for visitors.
The realization of InPark involved careful consideration of the urban context and the integration of organic natural forms. The park office and toilet block were strategically placed at the sides to provide screening of the outside urban activities, while a gradually sloped lawn contrasts the hard edges of the surrounding tall buildings. Native trees are planted around the lawn, creating a soft boundary of seasonal colors.
The design team utilized metal screens and translucent glass louvres to create a layered experience, delineating between the toilets and the garden. This enhances the transitional experience between the semi-open and semi-enclosed spaces, adding depth and visual interest to the park.
Completed in 2019, InPark spans an area of 8,480 square meters. The project took two years of planning and design, followed by two years of construction. Located in Kwun Tong, Kowloon, Hong Kong SAR, China, InPark has become a symbol of urban transformation and a hub for the local community.
The rebirth of InPark has revitalized the district, catalyzing the transformation of adjacent buildings and opening up new doorways for commercial development. It sublimates the memory and history of the local district, embracing the changing lifestyle of the people. InPark has become a refreshing and vibrant space that connects people with nature and celebrates the industrial heritage of the area.
In recognition of its outstanding design and contribution to quality of life improvements, InPark was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in City Planning and Urban Design in 2021. This prestigious award honors designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
Experience the magic of InPark, where art, nature, and community come together to create a truly unique and inspiring space.
